Director Jon Watts is currently hard at work filming Spider-Man: Homecoming in Atlanta, Georgia. He and star Tom Holland, along with some of the rest of the new cast, took a break last weekend to surprise fans with an appearance, and footage at San Diego Comic-Con. The footage hasn’t made its way online yet, but excitement is at an all-time high for Peter Parker’s first full movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it looks like another Avenger may be joining him.
A recent, somewhat vague report from the Atlanta Filming Twitter account seems to confirm that Scarlett Johansson was spotted on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Does this mean that Black Widow could be joining Spidey and Tony Stark to take down The Vulture? Maybe. But it could mean a lot of things. Here is what the account tweeted out on Wednesday.
“Well, well… hi Scarlett. What’cha doing here?”
Whoever the mystery person is that runs the Atlanta Filming Twitter account has spent quite a bit of time around the Spider-Man: Homecoming set recently, sending out little reports here and there. The post didn’t come with any photos to corroborate the claim, and it may be worth noting that many of the tweets on the account showcase very poor grammar and a lot of spelling errors. The account has been responsible for posting other photos from the set though, so there is some credibility to the statement.
As for what it means? It could be a few things. The most potentially exciting idea is that Scarlett Johansson is there to film some scenes as Natasha Romanoff or Black Widow. If she is indeed going to appear in the movie, it could just be in a cameo capacity, but there is a chance the younger Peter Parker could require the assistance of a more experienced Avenger. The other, much more boring option, is that Johansson was just doing a set visit. The MCU being what it is, that is not at all an unlikely scenario. Without anymore information, it is really difficult to try and figure out what this actually means, or if it is even reliable information.
We know that Spider-Man: Homecoming is taking place mostly in a high school setting, and that the cast is absolutely massive. Michael Keaton will be playing the aforementioned Vulture, and he will be joined by Marisa Tomei as Aunt MAy, Martin Starr, Angourie Rice, Logan Marshall-Green, Donald Glover, Zendaya, Hannibal Buress and Tony Revolori, who will be playing Flash Thompson. Robert Downey Jr. is also set to appear as Tony Stark, but maybe not Iron Man, as he is reportedly taking on more of a mentor’s role in the movie.
With a cast that large, it is almost hard to picture adding Scarlett Johannson into it without really muddying things up. This movie already has a lot to accomplish, and the last thing anyone wants is for it to turn into Spider-Man 3 all over again. Spider-Man: Homecoming is set for release on July 7, 2017.
